Big news in Hollywood today: the Golden Globes are going to be scaled way back due to actors' support of the writers' strike apparently masterminded by George Clooney. God knows most actors are too sheep-esque to actually stand up and say "No thanks, I won't attend in support of my fellow artists" unless some big fancy delicious movie star made it okay for them. So I applaud Clooney for stepping up to the plate. And boy has he PISSED OFF the people at NBC! Which is funny, since there's a very simple solution to all of this: PAYING PEOPLE FOR THEIR WORK. But whatever.
What I find most fascinating is the kind of bullshi* retarded redneck Right Wing horseshi* people are saying on the comment boards of all these newspapers and blogs talking about the topic. Like the Times Online for instance. Take a gander at some of the absolute idiocy being spouted.
I was pretty surprised. Of course, I move in a fairly Liberal-minded circle and work in an offshoot of the film industry, but all I've heard from people in regards to the strike is support. Sadness that there's nothing on TV, but support nonetheless. But out in the democratic world of the internet, the sentiments couldn't be different. Mostly, it's garden-variety Conservative outcry about how inappropriate, crass and--you knew it was coming--anti-American it is for a bunch of overpaid egotists to complain about their cohorts not being paid properly.
Hmmm...If this is how Conservative America feels, then why haven't they sold their TV sets instead of beating off to Bill O'Reilly? Why do they still go to movies? The success of a blockbuster cannot possibly hinge on Liberals alone, so I'm assuming there are plenty of Conservatives showing up at the box office. You can't tell me that stupid, retarded bullshi* assclown cashcows like "Wild Hogs" are hingeing on us godless Coastal commie pinko faggot bulldyke socialist intellectual literati glitterati.
And those supposedly obscene salaries? Julia became the first actress in history to reach the $20 mil. salary mark for 'Erin Brockovich.' That film made, in theatres only--not even counting DVD--$125,595,205 for Universal. That's a LOT of money. And what was the major draw to see 'Erin Brockovich?' Julia, Julia, Julia. Crunch the numbers. Julia made 16% of the gross she created. Seems fair to me.
And besides, if someone were tossing $20 mil. at you Conservative America to do something, would you turn it down? That's capitalism baby! Isn't that what you Conservatives have such a boner for? Free market economics? Paying what the market bears? Whenever it's suggested that top-level CEO's lessen THEIR income for the good of the worker bees in the cubicles, you start crying Communism. So why are you hollering at celebrities to do the equivalent?!
Here's my idea: if you're so upset and offended and discombobulated by the Hollywood goings-on, then do it your damn self. What's stopping you from opening a couple credit cards, buying a camera, making your own movie, and shopping it to festivals? Sleeper hits are born everyday from less effort.
Oh, I remember now. You do do that every now and again. And the product is usually so terrible, even my own rabid, frothing at the mouth Evangelical Republican brother derides them as crap.
Point being, just shut up. And leave the damn writers alone. All they're trying to do is, ya know, GET PAID FOR THEIR WORK.
Assholes.
